The problem with many classics is that they are painfully tedious. Next, the novel seemed to be constantly moving to a climactic ending that it never reached.

That is not the case. A large portion of the book was occupied by rambling discourses about government, civic duty, and the morality of war.
I didn’t initially have a problem with Heinlein’s political or social views. I realize that the life of a soldier is probably pretty accurately portrayed in the book, days upon days of boring drudgery with delpo few moments fulm life-and-death craziness, but that doesn’t necessarily make for a particularly interesting book. Starship Troopers was again entirely different in feel from the previous books I’d read by him. Within those pages we learn the importance of food, and being able to sleep in any condition.
I’ll add more when I finish. Heinlein does not do this. Even his time off gets more detail than all the fighting Rico participates in combined! It is way more entertaining than the average classic and way smarter than the average sci-fi book.
I think I understand why the fantsria was so wonderful, it’s because the satire writes itself when you have such a hideous subject matter like Starship Troopers. Thrill to the excitment of marching into the middle of nowhere!
